Changes to Take It Away – Under 18s Now Eligible

From Today 21 October 2011 the Take It Away Scheme will be again open to individual purchasing a musical instrument for someone under the age of 18.

From 21 October 2011 the rules will revert to how they used to be this time last year.  When the government funding was cut to the Arts Council they were unable to offer the scope of support they had done previously.  After a significant drop in sales amongst suppliers and pressure applied by Take It Away and the Arts Council to gain funding the service has returned.

Those wishing to apply for a loan for an insturment for an under 18 yer old will be able to do so, however it will only be an instore option and a disclaimer will have to be signed by the person taking the loan agreeing who the instrument is for.

Unfortunately it remains the same that over 25′s will not be able to apply for the loans for instruments for themselves.  Lets just hope that over the coming months there will be an improvement in the economy and the Arts Council can gain some more funding.

If you would like to find out more, ask us some questions or arrange a purchase please call us on 0845 224 3013 or visit the store.

SlapKlatz Anti Slip Gel Control Pads – Moongel Alternatives

So many of you come into the shop and ask for moongel and we have struggled to get hold of it, and gorilla snot.  You can still get it online but we were darned if we can find out where it came from.  Active Music to the Rescue.  In walked Lee today with a new product.  SlapKlatz.  A weird name we know, so they have decided to nickname them slappers.

Here they are:

We have a couple of packs in the shop right now if you are desperate otherwise they will be a few days and we will have a big box of them.  I’m pretty sure they will catch on and be as popular.  mainly because you get a couple of different sizes and have more control over the tone of your drum skins.

If you would like to buy a pack in green click here or in clear click here.

Blackstar Foot-Pedal Modification

The footpedal that comes with a Blackstar HT-5R as standard comes wit a trailing socket.  This is usually fine but what happens if you use a pedal board and dont want it crammed with leads, what happens if the lead breaks just before a gig.  By modifying this pedal to have a jack socket instead of a fixed cable any 1/4 inch jack to jack cable can be used to control the amp.

Provided there is enough room in the pedal this can be done to most.  Of course you can buy a new pedal which is about the same price as the modification but we all know that there is nothing like have the matching branding on the pedal to your amp and using the right stuff, plus custom gear is cool.

We do a lot of custom mods including specialist secure headphone jacks, power adapters, we can make switching pedals with toggle switches, make to break, break to make etc and can help you design your own pedal board with various  options.

Get in touch with one of our technicians on 0845 224 3013.

Each month we restring, refinish, rewire and reshape countless instruments, amplifiers, PA systems, speakers and pretty much any electrical.  We have even fixed a digital camera, GHD hair straighteners, a belt and a computer.

We have great rates, a fast efficient service and an honest approach when it comes to whether it is worth fixing things.  Give us a call today, get a quote and see what we can fix for you.

We are going to try and keep a bit of a blog going on some of the repair work we do so you can see what happens.  keep an eye out for the upcoming photos of the water damaged vintage bass.

Album of the Month – Rollin’ On by Gavin Thorpe

Its hard for me to imagine what it would be like to be signed by a major label, meet some of the greatest names in the industry, perform in venues that only some dream of.  Nothing I have ever written has made it into a movie, been used in a hit TV show and I havent had the pleasure of recording at Abbey Road.

This man has had all of these.

Gavin Thorpe, has had all of these things and yet he still battles against the music industry fighting to get a hit song in mainstream music.  Well, this could very well be the Album that makes it happen.

The feel of the album to me is smooth, and carries momentum.  I loved listening to the tracks in the order they were on the album there was a sense of flow that just seemed to fit.  As I sit here now writing about the album I though it prudent to be listening to it.  Its been a busy day here in the shop but the gentle strumming of acoustic guitar, coupled with lap-steel, a bit of piano and some strings is making me feel very relaxed, calm and also inspired.

I am huge fan of the blues, country and acoustic folk rock so when the three collide it gives me great pleasure.  Gavin has often been compared to David Gray and yes we can see why but in this latest album we can defintly see his fondness of Ray Lamontagne, Bon Iver and such other artists who have been teetering around the mainstream shining through on tracks.

We may not be hearing Gavin on Radio 1 just yet as the fashion seems to be for “music” made electronically. BUT…If, like me, you enjoy songs written and performed straight from the heart then this album should be on your playlist.

Check out www.gavinthorpe.com for details on how to buy the new album.

Now Open Sundays.

Its taken us some time to make this move not for any other reason that we like a good lie in on a Sunday, a bacon sandwich and a cup of tea.  Oh and we’ve been doing lots of back ground work to get us where we are today.  So as of today we are now going to be open on Sundays between 11am and 4pm.

Sundays will be the perfect time to come and try out acoustic instruments, big amps and anything else that requires a little more space than on our other busy days.

Why not stop in and see us before your lesson with www.westsidemusicschool.co.uk.

We will also be encouraging informal jams in the shop so come on down join in, bring in your guitars for lessons on how to fix them, change strings, come and have a jam with staff or other customers or just pop in for a cuppa.

Afterwords you could come down to the Open Mic Night at The Plough, check out our website for details
